Onion & Chili Chutney

Postby Bosky » Thu Nov 06, 2014 11:02 pm

This is fiery, spicy but amazingly tasty chutney that could spice up any breakfast or meal, from south Indian Dosa to Punjabi Paratha. It is one of the favourites in our house and we all love it and finish it withing couple of days once it is made. It tastes best when it is fresh, but you can store it for 4-5 days in a refrigerator.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shallot onions (small sambar onions), peeled
  • 1 medium sized tomato, chopped
  • 7-8 dry red chilies, chopped
  • 1 tsp gram dal (chana dal)
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida (हिंग)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 tbsp cooking oil

Procedure

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds when the oil is heated. Let them splutter and then add asafoetida (हिंग). Fry gram chana in this oil until it is brown, then add chopped red chilies in this and fry it for some time. Add peeled shallots to this mixture, let them cook for some time till they are soft and tender. Add chopped tomato and again let it cook till it is soft. Switch off the heat and let it cool for some time. Once it is at room temperature, grind it in the mixer-grinder till it turns into a smooth paste. Add salt and lemon and your chutney is ready to eat.

This chutney tastes awesome with mixed dal wadas or uttapam or even parathas. Enjoy it with your loved ones!
